Rules as Code for GovCMS - Moving Towards Production

The Rules as Code (RaC) sandpit project has been rollicking on a 12-month ride along the testing and refining rollercoaster and is getting ready to emerge into the world.

Back in March 2024, we launched the RaC sandpit project where you were given an opportunity to test if the method and technology was right for your needs. Each sandpit covered a limited scope that could go from inception to showcase quickly, usually within a two-month time frame. At the end, each project team was given access to a stand-alone sandpit environment that demonstrated how RaC could help solve their user’s needs and could be shared with their wider business area or agency.

As we progressed, lessons were learned, hurdles were overcome, regulatory knots were untangled, and everyone involved came out with updated skills and knowledge. Our partners, Salsa Digital, did a great job in taking complex legislation and, with the help of agency based subject matter experts, turning it into code.

The sandpits created covered a wide range of topics and user journeys:

  • Financial calculation base final entitlements estimator for Members of Parliamentary Staff (MoPS).
  • A hearing services eligibility checker for the Department of Health and Aged Care.
  • A compliance tool covering the Investment Oversight Framework for DTA.
  • A CSV based tool to check requirements for exporting agricultural products for DAFF.
  • A permit requirement assessment tool for importing tobacco products for ABF.
  • And more!

An exciting new phase beckons; bringing RaC to the GovCMS platform. We are working towards a production environment in 2025 and are looking forward to helping you develop solutions to get information to your end users quickly and efficiently.

It’s not too late to get involved. If you are still eager to test the technology first, before committing time and resources, we are accepting new sandpit projects up to the end of March 2025.
