Update to Drupal 7

Tuesday 21 July 2020

If you have a Drupal 7 website you will now have some extra time to plan for Drupal 9.

On 24 June 2020 Drupal announced it will extend End-of-Life for Drupal 7 until 28 November 2022. This decision was made by the Drupal Association to give website owners more time to recover from the impact of COVID-19 on budgets and businesses.

Drupal 8 will still be end of life on 2 November 2021.

We will not be accepting any new Drupal 7 websites on the GovCMS platform from July 2020.

You will need to move your SaaS Drupal 7 websites onto the GovCMS Drupal 9 Distribution by November 2022. You have two options:

  • If you have budget for the 20/21 financial year, you can rebuild your website on Drupal 8 and update to Drupal 9 when the GovCMS Distribution is available, or
  • You can wait to rebuild your website on Drupal 9 when the GovCMS Drupal 9 Distribution is available.

We are currently working on a GovCMS Drupal 9. Further details will be available soon.

We suggest you use this extra time to plan to ensure you have the budget and resources available to move your website to Drupal 9 prior to November 2022. If you’ve thought about auditing your website to remove content you no longer need or you’re thinking of merging multiple websites, now is a good time.

We will be contacting the owners of all Drupal 7 sites on the platform in the coming weeks to discuss your migration plans. Even though the timeline has been extended by Drupal, we will be working closely with you to get migrations completed in the coming year wherever possible.
